Privacy Policy

Introduction

This Privacy Policy explains how What If App ("the App", "we", "us") handles your data. We designed the App to respect your privacy and to minimize data collection.

1. Core Principles

  • We do not require you to create an account.
  • We do not collect personal information such as your name, email, or phone number.
  • We do not build user profiles or track you across apps or websites.
  • Your questions are only processed to generate answers and are not stored or logged permanently.

2. Data You Enter

When you type a question into the App, the text you provide is temporarily sent off your device in order to generate an AI-powered answer.

Your question is transmitted to our secure backend server, which forwards it to our AI provider (via OpenRouter, including providers such as OpenAI) and then returns the generated response back to your device.

  • We do not attach your name, email address, account ID, advertising ID, or other direct identifiers to this text.
  • We do not store or log your questions or answers in any persistent database.

3. Backend Processing

Our backend acts only as a technical relay ("proxy") between the App and the AI provider:

  • It receives your question.
  • It forwards the question to the AI provider.
  • It returns the AI-generated answer to your device.

Processing on our backend is ephemeral and takes place only in memory as needed to deliver the response.

We do not retain, log, or archive the text of your questions or the answers.

4. AI Provider

To generate narrative answers, we use OpenRouter and its integrated model providers (such as OpenAI).

Your question is sent to the AI provider solely for the purpose of generating the requested response.

The AI provider may process the content temporarily for safety checks, abuse prevention, and service quality, but it is not used to build advertising profiles or to identify you personally.

Processing is also subject to the AI provider's own terms and privacy policies, which we encourage you to review.

5. Local Data on Your Device

The App stores limited information locally on your device, such as:

  • Your remaining answers balance
  • Whether you have an active Unlimited subscription (non-personal entitlement)
  • Basic app settings, including appearance (light/dark mode)
  • Local caching or preferences used for app functionality

We do not have direct access to this local data.

Deleting the App will typically remove this locally stored information.

6. No Tracking, No Advertising Identifiers

The App does not:

  • Use third-party advertising SDKs
  • Track you across other apps or websites
  • Use advertising identifiers (such as IDFA) for tracking or profiling

This does not affect the limited diagnostic telemetry described in Section 13, which is used solely for crash reporting and performance monitoring.

If we introduce optional, anonymized analytics in the future, we will update this Privacy Policy and, where required, request your consent.

7. Sensitive Content and Safety

The App includes safeguards intended to reduce harmful or unsafe content, including topics related to self-harm, violence, or abuse.

However, no automated system is perfect, and we cannot guarantee that all such content will be filtered.

The App is not a substitute for professional help.

If you experience thoughts of self-harm or harm to others, contact local emergency services or a crisis hotline immediately.

8. International Use and Legal Basis

The App is available globally. We aim to align with major privacy frameworks such as:

  • GDPR (European Union)
  • UK GDPR
  • CCPA/CPRA (California)
  • PIPEDA (Canada)
  • PDPA (Singapore)
  • APPI (Japan)
  • Korean PIPA
  • Other relevant regional data protection laws

Because we minimize data collection and do not store personal data on our servers, our role as a data controller is intentionally limited.

Where applicable, the legal basis for processing is our legitimate interest in providing and improving the App, or your consent when explicitly requested.

9. Data Security

All communication between the App, our backend, and the AI provider is encrypted (HTTPS).

We do not maintain our own database of user content.

Because we do not store identifiable personal data, there is no central repository of your personal information that could be exposed in the event of a breach.

You remain responsible for securing your device (e.g., using a passcode, Face ID, Touch ID).

10. Your Rights

Depending on your jurisdiction, you may have rights regarding access, correction, deletion, or restriction of personal data.

Because we do not maintain user accounts and do not store personal data on our servers, many rights can be exercised directly on your device, for example by uninstalling the App.

11. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy as our features evolve.

When changes occur, we will update the "Last Updated" date.

Continued use of the App means you accept the revised Policy.

⭐ 12. Telemetry and Error Reporting (Sentry)

We use Sentry to collect crash reports, server-side errors, and performance diagnostics that help us monitor app stability and maintain service quality.

Telemetry we collect includes:

  • Application crashes and stack traces
  • Server-side exceptions
  • Performance data (e.g., request timings)
  • Outbound HTTP call metrics
  • Automatically generated breadcrumbs (e.g., app lifecycle, HTTP activity)

To help us debug issues related to answer generation, we attach a small set of non-identifying tags, such as:

  • generated_style
  • generated_rarity
  • answer_outcome

These tags do not contain your question text or any sensitive content.

We explicitly do NOT send:

  • Your raw questions
  • Your generated answers
  • Personal identifiers (name, email, phone number, advertising ID)
  • Request bodies or secrets

Metadata Sentry receives may include:

  • App version
  • OS version
  • Device model
  • Non-identifying environment data

We redact or avoid sending sensitive information and limit telemetry to what is necessary for technical diagnostics.

Sentry processes diagnostic data under its own privacy and data-handling policies.

We encourage you to review Sentry's Privacy Policy for more details.
